Action packed year of events for the Stars Appeal

14 January 2010 13:57

The Stars Appeal has announced its jam-packed 2010 events list. The Appeal team are hoping the exciting and varied programme will be a great boost to their Caring 4 Kids campaign which is aiming to create a Family Unit for the parents and siblings of premature and critically ill babies and a dedicated children's area in the Accident & Emergency department at Salisbury District Hospital.

Hannah Paye, Fundraising Co-ordinator for the Appeal said: "We had some fantastic events last year and it was great to see so many people get behind the Appeal, join in the fun and more importantly significantly contribute to the completion of the first phase of the Caring 4 Kids campaign. This year we want even more people to get involved and support us, so we can make the new Family Unit for the parents and siblings of premature and critically ill babies and the dedicated children's area in A&E a reality in 2011."

Kicking off the major events on Thursday March 18 is the All Day Auction with Spire FM and the Salisbury Journal. Featuring desirable lots ranging from taxis for a year to a professional chef cooking you a meal at your home, all auctioned live on Spire FM. The Appeal is asking anyone who can donate a 'lot' to get in contact by calling 01722 429005.

Appeal President Lord Pembroke is again hosting the annual sponsored Walk for Wards on Sunday, June 20. Wilton House is also holding an Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 4.

Teddies are being urged to get ready for the annual Teddy Bear Parachute Jump at Salisbury Cathedral on Saturday April, 24. Last year 350 teddies felt brave enough to take the plunge and raise money for the Appeal.

Moving into the second half of the year and the events keep coming. The Rockbourne Fair, a three day Christmas shopping fair, takes place on October 20-22, and the sixth annual Tidworth 10k will take place in November.

The Appeal has also secured bonded places for some of the most renowned running events in the country, including the Bath Half Marathon (March 7) and Great South Run (October 24).

Notes to Editors

The Stars Appeal raises money to create the best possible experience for the 300,000 people across South Wiltshire, North and East Dorset and West Hampshire who rely on Salisbury District Hospital. It funds extra care and equipment over and above that provided by the NHS. The Appeal benefits all wards and departments. It also raises money for major projects. Thanks to the generous support of the local community, the Appeal has already funded a number of projects, including special treatment and diagnostic equipment for premature and critically-ill babies and creating a highly advanced keyhole cancer surgery suite.

The Appeal's current major project is the Caring 4 Kids campaign, which aims to fund a range of new facilities and equipment to make life better for thousands of local children in Hospital. These include:

A self-contained family unit attached to the Hospital's special care baby unit (NICU), which will provide parents' accommodation, play rooms and educational facilities for mums, dads and siblings. Currently, many parents face long journeys to visit their babies, but this much needed new facility will enable them to stay close at hand and spend vital additional time with their newborn child.

A dedicated children's waiting and treatment area for the thousands of children that attend the Accident and Emergency department each year.

Thanks to the support of local people, the Stars Appeal Caring 4 Kids campaign has already funded a range of extras including 'home from home' rooms, multi-sensory equipment and play areas within the Hospital's new Children's Unit that is due to open in December 2010.
