Childrens Unit Wins National Design Award

The Children’s Unit at Salisbury District Hospital has won a national Building Better Health Care Award in recognition of its unique child-friendly design and bright and sensitive internal decoration.

The Best Building Product in Healthcare Award was one of 17 categories and was awarded to Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and Altro Ltd. The ArtCare team created the digital designs using children’s images to transform rooms and clinical areas so that they were light and sensitive to the particular needs of children and families. The new bright and spacious wards now provide greater comfort and privacy for children and their families. Themed areas and colourful surroundings engage children, delighting and distracting them from clinical procedures.

Thanks to the support of the local community, the Appeal’s Caring 4 Kids campaign successfully raised over £1 million to fund additional facilities for this unit. This included home from home rooms, therapy facilities for children with disabilities, a multi-sensory room and indoor and outdoor play areas. It also included  the additional furnishings and Altro’s environmental enhancements.

Peter Hill, Interim  Chief Executive of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust said: “ This really is a truly fantastic new facility and local children, schools and community groups had a key role to play in its unique design. We’ve received so many positive comments from children, families staff and the local community since it was opened by HRH the Countess of Wessex earlier in the year. I know the judges were very impressed with the mix of beauty and practicality and while we won one award we were also shortlisted in two other categories.”

Mr Hill added: “Clearly the award and nominations would not have been possible without the help of so many people and I want to congratulate all those involved in the development of the new unit. I also want to thank local people for all their support of our charity, the Stars Appeal. It is their generosity which has enabled us to provide the many extras which make this such an outstanding unit which stands out from so many others.“

Notes to editors:

The move of the children’s unit to the main hospital meant that children’s services were able to move away from wartime buildings into first class modern facilities based on level 3 and 4 of the existing hospital. Thanks to the support of the local community, Salisbury District Hospital’s fundraising charity, the Stars Appeal, successfully raised in excess of £1 million to fund additional facilities for the unit which includes home from home rooms, therapy facilities for children with disabilities, a multi-sensory room as well as indoor and outdoor play areas.
