Local designers and groups have an opportunity to contribute to internal design for New Children’s Unit

Artists and designers have an opportunity to work with community and school groups to produce designs that will be used in the new Children’s Unit at Salisbury District Hospital.

The new unit, which is supported by the Stars Appeal, will mean that children can be cared for in first-class modern facilities based on level 3 and 4 of the existing hospital when completed in December 2010.

Penny Robbins from the ArtCare said: "It’s important that children are treated in a sensitive and family-friendly environment that provides distraction and delight during what can sometimes be an anxious time for children and parents. It also needs to provide stimulation, therapy and play opportunities. The look and feel of the building has an essential role to play in this and we hope that local people, community groups and schools can help in that process by applying for commissions for artwork and designs within the new unit. Our challenge is to make the unit interesting and welcoming for a whole age range of children – from a few days old, right up to 18 years old."

Mrs Robbins added:

"More information can be found at: Designers wishing to be considered for any of the commissions need to read the background information and commission details thoroughly. They should then complete the registration, including appropriate supporting documents and send their registration in by 4pm, Friday 11th June 2010. Schools and children’s groups should email ArtCare to talk through how they would like to get involved, please email: ".
