Local people to find out more about how to keep well this winter

Self Care for Life – Be Healthy this Winter - 17 to 23 November 2014

Hospital staff and local people will have an opportunity to find out more about how they can improve their own health and pick up potential signs of serious illnesses during Self Care Week between 17 to 23 November at Salisbury District Hospital.

This year there will be a particular focus on keeping healthy this winter and every lunchtime throughout the week specialist staff will be on hand in Springs Restaurant to provide information on a wide range of areas, from how to protect against flu and healthy eating to more specific support around alcohol and stop smoking advice. There will also be displays in the Medical Surgical Outpatients Department, Hedgerows Coffee Shop and in Salisbury Library in the city centre.

Claire Gorzanski, Head of Clinical Effectiveness said: “ Self Care Week is an annual event that focuses on ensuring that there is support for self care throughout communities and families and across all generations. While the NHS provides care and treatment both in hospital and the community, it’s essential that people also take responsibility for their own wellbeing, so that they understand how to look after their own health and wellbeing.”

“This year there will be a particular emphasis on keeping healthy during the winter with a range of advice and information. We want to use this opportunity to remind people to ensure they are stocked up with medicines for winter aliments such coughs and colds as these are best treated at home. We also want to use this opportunity to promote the national Feeling Under the Weather campaign, with the aim of encouraging people to access self care information early from NHS Choices at www.nhs.uk/asap, and seek advice from pharmacies, which are also a recognised source of very good health information.“
