Relatives will now have a more sensitive and comfortable environment to pay their last respects to loved ones as a result of new bereavement facilities at Salisbury District Hospital.
The improvements follow £30,000 funding by the Department of Health as part of the King’s Fund’s Enhancing the Healing Environment programme and additional funding from the Stars Appeal, League of Friends of Salisbury Hospital and the Salisbury Hospice.
The funds have been used to build a new reception area and refurbish viewing areas and family rooms. Bereavement services previously provided in the former Patient Advice and Liaison Office, have been moved to the new facility where all relatives needs can be met in one location.
Luke March, Chairman of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust said: " It is important that we have facilities that provide dignity for the deceased and a sensitive and caring environment where relatives can be given the time and support that they need."
"Over the years the Trust has introduced a number of initiatives that have improved the quality of care for patients who are dying, and the level of support for the family. However, access to the mortuary, and the facility itself, were far from ideal and the team has worked hard to provide a sensitive and professional service in facilities that were in real need of improvement."
"The bereavement team now has first class facilities in which to work, which complement the professional service they already provide and the integral role they play in the overall care we give to our patients and their relatives."
