Visitors and staff will have an opportunity to learn more about the cultural diversity that exists within Salisbury District Hospital as part of the Equality is for Everyone event on Thursday, October 16.
This year’s annual event will focus on celebrating the diversity of NHS staff . There will be information stands, food tasting and African music in Springs Restaurant between 11am and 2pm, with the aim of highlighting the many different cultural groups at the hospital and the positive benefits of living and working in a multi cultural society.
Peter Hill, Chief Executive at Salisbury District Hospital said: “ Salisbury has a diverse community with people from many parts of the world living and working together which enriches our society. This diversity is reflected in the people that work or come to Salisbury District Hospital for treatment, which is why it’s so important for us to highlight the positive benefits for our hospital and celebrate the value that this brings to the local community.”
In 2011, the Office for the National Statistics estimated that 4.7% of the Wiltshire population identify as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME). Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust employs around 4,000 staff , of which around 9% of the workforce is from a BAME group. Information stands at the Equality is for Everyone Event will highlight the breadth of different cultures and nationalities working at the hospital including those from Europe, Africa and Asia.
Dr Nick Marsden , Chairman at Salisbury District Hospital said: “ We believe that equality is about treating everyone as an individual, with the respect, consideration and understanding that is so essential to the health and wellbeing of our organisation. We are lucky to have staff from so many parts of the world who have brought their skills and experience to Salisbury. Equality is for Everyone gives us an opportunity to highlight the differences between people of all backgrounds and the way in which they enhance the care we provide here for our patients.”
