Caring 4 Kids Campaign soars past half way mark to £1 million target

The Stars Appeal has passed the half way mark towards its £1million target for the Caring 4 Kids Campaign thanks to the generosity of local people, businesses and organisations.

The campaign aims to raise £1 million to help fund a new children's unit at Salisbury District Hospital. After a very successful year’s fundraising in 2008 including a clay shoot and sponsored walk at Wilton House that raised £75,000 between them, a fun day that raised £13,000, the Tidworth 10k which has raised £25,000 to date and a Christmas raffle that raised £22,000, the Appeal team have announced that they have reached the £600,000 milestone.

The new unit will cost £4 million in total, with the Caring 4 Kids Campaign covering the cost of extra facilities and equipment. These include ‘home from home’ rooms for children with cancer and cystic fibrosis who regularly spend long periods in hospital; indoor and outdoor play spaces; therapy and assessment areas; multi-sensory equipment for disabled children and dedicated parent’s accommodation where families can stay close to their child.

Kathryn Skinner, Senior Sister on the Children’s Ward at Salisbury District Hospital said: “The support that we have received so far has been amazing and I would like to thank everyone involved for helping us get this far. The extra facilities and equipment that the Caring 4 Kids Campaign is aiming to fund will make a huge difference to the thousands of children that we treat here each year.”

Dave Cates, Director of Fundraising said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us so far and helped us to reach this important milestone. We hope, despite the current economic climate, that people and organisations will continue to get behind the Appeal as we strive to reach our £1million target.”

The Stars Appeal has a series of events planned for 2009. These include teddy bear parachuting at Salisbury Cathedral,  an Easter egg hunt and Walk for Wards, both at Wilton House, and the Rockbourne Fair in October as well as a big on air auction on Spire FM in March. If you would like to get involved or find out more about the campaign, please contact Hannah Paye at the Stars Appeal office on 01722 429005 or email ENDS

Notes to Editors

The Stars Appeal raises money to create the best possible experience for the 300,000 people who rely on Salisbury District Hospital. It funds extra care and equipment over and above that provided by the NHS. The Appeal benefits all wards and departments. It also raises money for major projects. In 2007, thanks to the generous support of the local community, the Appeal funded special treatment and diagnostic equipment for premature and critically-ill babies and an advanced keyhole cancer surgery suite. The latest project is the Caring 4 Kids Campaign.
