Hospital Trust recognised for good employment practices

Salisbury Health Care NHS Trust has achieved the NHS Improving Working Lives (IWL) Practice Plus standard which recognises good employment practices and a range of initiatives that support NHS staff at work.

The achievement was ratified by the Avon Gloucestershire and Wiltshire Strategic Health Authority following a report provided by a validation team that visited Salisbury District Hospital.

In its report the team highlighted particular areas of good practice including, staff childcare co-ordination and facilities, social and leisure facilities, flexible working, and partnership working between staff and management.

Jenny Hair, Deputy Director of Human Resources said: "Our staff are an essential part of what we do and what we achieve as a healthcare organisation, so it's important that we take every opportunity to develop, maintain and improve our practice."

"Improving Working Lives enables us to focus on the areas that are important to staff and we are pleased to have been awarded such a high standard in the IWL process."

IWL involves an initial self-assessment of how the Trust performs in seven key areas that affect staff in their day-to-day working lives. These areas are:

  • Human Resources Strategy and Management
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Staff Involvement and Communication
  • Flexible Working
  • Healthy Workplace
  • Training and Development
  • Flexible Retirement, Childcare and Support for Carers

This is followed up by visits by an external team of verifiers and a rigorous follow-up assessment through interviews with staff at all levels and across the Trust's services.

Jenny Hair said: "This is an excellent achievement, but it's important that we don't stand still. Over the coming months we will be looking at ways in which we can make further improvements, especially around protected learning time, in order to ensure that our staff can fully benefit from the education and training opportunities that we can offer them." Ends
