Kidney patients to have their dialysis locally

Local renal patients can now have their kidney dialysis in Salisbury rather than having to travel to Basingstoke, Totton or Portsmouth three times each week.

Initially 18 patients will be able to have dialysis at the new unit at Salisbury District Hospital, where they will be able to enjoy comfortable surroundings with a range of facilities.

Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust has been working closely with Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust to provide these new facilities and improve the quality of life for the growing numbers of renal patients requiring dialysis.

Peter Hill, Director of Operations at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust said: "Up until now patients will have had to travel hundreds of miles a week for kidney dialysis. However, this exciting new development means that more patients from this area will now be able to receive this vital treatment closer to their homes."

The unit will be managed by Renal Services PLC, a commercial partner of the Wessex Renal and Transplant Unit at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.  Ends

Notes to Editors:

The Wessex Renal and Transplant Service (WRTS) is based at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, and provides a comprehensive renal service to an adult population of over two million, covering Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and the adjacent parts of Wiltshire and West Sussex.
