Rockbourne Fair to support Stars Appeal

The Rockbourne Fair is celebrating its 20th Anniversary and returns to the Salisbury Racecourse in October with its unique pre-Christmas shopping event.

The Rockbourne Fair has been delighting thousands of shoppers since it began in a barn in 1988 and is now firmly established as one of the year's 'must-attend' events for local people and beyond. This year there will be 90 stands, 40% of which will be new, with stall holders from across the UK selling exclusive and original goods that make perfect Christmas presents.

The Food Hall, and the 'Home and Garden' sections will again feature highly. There is an excellent restaurant offering lunches, snacks, tea and coffee, as well as a bar, a professionally run crèche and free parking. The Fair will remain open until 7.30 pm on the Thursday evening.

All profits made by the Fair are distributed to local charities. Over the last 20 years, Chairman Jennie Sherborne MBE, and her committee of volunteers, have distributed over £406,000 to good causes. From 2009 the Fair will be organised by volunteers from the Stars Appeal,  with  the proceeds from the first Fair going to the Caring 4 Kids campaign which is raising money for state-of-the-art equipment in a new children's centre.

Dave Cates, Director of Fundraising for the Stars Appeal said, “The committee have always given their time and expertise free of charge and particularly for Jennie it has almost been a full-time job.  As 20 years approached, Jennie made the momentous decision to give up and has been joined in that decision by her committee. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to carry on the sterling work of Jennie and her committee and we look forward to continuing their success with the Rockbourne Fair in 2009 and beyond.”

Jennie Sherborne said:  “After all the work that has gone to building up the Fair we didn’t want to see it fizzle out. We are delighted the Stars Appeal is taking up the baton from us. I have seen at first hand the difference that their work makes to local people being treated at the Hospital and their new Caring 4 Kids campaign will benefit many thousands of local children. It is a cause very close to my heart and those of all my committee.”

"The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to making the Rockbourne Fair such a successful event. It has been such a concerted effort by so many – just too many to name, but thank you all for joining in this wonderful event and supporting so many very worthwhile causes which all too often have been overlooked by society. It has been a great experience, and would not have materialised without your unfailing support.”

Mrs Sherborne added:  “We hope everyone will come and visit the 2008 Rockbourne Fair and enable the current committee to donate more generously than ever before to their chosen charities.  Please make a note in your diaries to attend the 2009 Fair to support The Stars Appeal at Salisbury District Hospital.” Ends

The Stars Appeal raises money to create the best possible experience for the 300,000 people who rely on Salisbury District Hospital. It funds extra care and equipment over and above that provided by the NHS. The Appeal benefits all wards and departments. It also raises money for major projects. In 2007, thanks to the generous support of the local community, the Appeal funded advanced equipment for premature and critically ill babies and an advanced keyhole cancer surgery suite.

The Stars Appeal now faces its biggest challenge to date. The Caring 4 Kids campaign is raising £1million to help create a state-of-the-art children’s centre at the Hospital which will treat over 6,000 children each year. The Caring 4 Kids campaign will fund a range of additional facilities and equipment within the centre including parents’ accommodation, dedicated long stay rooms for children with serious illnesses, indoor and outdoor play areas and a multi sensory room for children with disabilities. The Caring 4 Kids campaign will also fund high-tech equipment for diagnosis and treatment.
