Registration of Baby’s Birth
It is a legal requirement to register a baby within 42 days of the birth.
If you do not live in or near Salisbury, there may be a register office closer to where you live e.g. Tidworth, Warminster.
A list of offices and opening times can be found using the GOV.UK website.
All offices operate on an appointment system. Contact details are available using the individual office sites from the link above.
- If the parents are married when the baby is born, either parent may register the birth.
- If the baby’s parents are not married, and they want the father’s details to be included in the register, both parents should attend the office together to register the birth.
- If the baby’s parents are not married, the mother is not obliged to have the father’s name included in the entry.
- If the father’s details are not entered at the time of registration, there are special procedures for them to be added at a later date if required.
The registration service is free of charge. A short birth certificate will also be issued free of charge, however this certificate does not show parents’ details. The parents will have the opportunity to purchase one or more full birth certificates, which includes parents' details, usually required for official purposes eg. Passport.
A supervisor is always available to provide support, advice and guidance to mothers, families and midwives. Mothers may contact us to talk about the standard of care they have received or to discuss if they have not felt supported. Midwives may contact us for professional advice and guidance.
