The WRGL is committed to the continuous training of all members of staff and is also actively involved in hosting trainees under the UK-wide Modernising of Scientific Careers programme, established by the Department of Health in 2008.

Scientific staff

Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) training programme:

The WRGL hosts trainees on the Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Genetics and Bioinformatics as part of the national MSC programme overseen by the National School of Healthcare Science. We also support the provision of the Genetics module for STP trainees on other Life Science programmes. In addition to the STP, since the beginning of 2015 we have been hosting the Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) programme.

Post-registration training:

The WRGL actively supports all Clinical Scientists with their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) including those working towards the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) examinations and encourages participation in the MSc in Genomics Medicine delivered by Health Education England.

Technical staff

Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) training programme:

The WRGL supports the cytogenetic module for the MSC Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) which is delivered by the University of West of England (UWE).

In-service training:

In-service training for technical staff is achieved through completion of a modular and competency-based training programme. The WRGL also has approval from the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) for training of its Certification of Achievement Part 1 and Part 2.

Work experience

Given the laboratory’s commitment to the MSC training programme, work experience placements are not routinely accepted and are considered on a case-by-case basis.
