Keep Family and Friends Up To Date

Senior managers from Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust have thrown their support behind a special social enterprise website which aims to provide information to family and friends about a loved one in hospital.

The site (www.justvisiting.com) helps connect patients with their friends and relatives online. It is secure, convenient and free and allows the creation of ‘virtual visiting rooms’, where patients and their relatives can invite friends and family to correspond with them.

The team behind justvisiting used their own personal experiences to develop the site, which now gets more than 700 hits every month. Its success is growing daily and the site works in the following way:

  • The person keeping everyone updated opens an online visiting room unique to the patient and allows access to friends and family.
  • This main contact (the room manager) posts updates in the room which are viewed by authorised visitors invited by the room manager.
  • Visitors can then send messages for the patient or between themselves e.g. to wish the patient well or to arrange a visiting schedule.

Carole Clements-Cork, from Washington, set up a justvisiting account when her father was a patient in hospital. She said she saw a poster for Just Visiting on a notice board in the hospital.

"I looked it up on the web and thought what a great idea. It was so user friendly and easy to set up and you even have the facility to invite your family to join. You can also put the room number of the person in hospital and we used it to put my father's patient direct telephone number on and when the visiting times were, etc. There is a message facility too, so if anyone wanted to check something further you could do so directly. It really was as simple as that."

"My father was in hospital for 12 weeks with limited visiting to his room, so not only was I able to update it per visit but also did a separate notice each day for who was visiting at what times. We certainly found it invaluable and it saved relatives and friends having to ring us for updates as they logged on at their own convenience to see how things were and to see when they could visit."

"On the day of my father's discharge we used www.justvisiting.com to inform family and friends of the fantastic news."
