New Chief Executive appointed to Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust Page title dots

13 May 2008 08:34

Matthew Kershaw has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and will take up his post on August 1.

He replaces Frank Harsent who took up the post of Chief Executive of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on May 1. Peter Hill, Director of Operations, will be Acting Chief Executive until Matthew Kershaw takes up his post.

Matthew Kershaw (37) is currently Chief Operating Officer at East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust. He began his career in London, working for the College of Health, which looks at the patient's perspective of the NHS. He then moved to Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals, to work as an administration assistant in general surgery, before being seconded to Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust,  where he became Hospital Director for Crawley Hospital.

He changed posts to become the Director of Strategy for three years and ultimately Deputy Chief Executive,  before moving to the Department of Health to work as the Director of the National Orthopaedic Project and the National Director for the 18 week project. After two years of working in a national role, he returned to the NHS where he was appointed to his current role.

Between November 2007 and January 2008,  he was asked by South East Coast Strategic Health Authority to work with Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust to help  reshape their elective and emergency care systems, in addition to his role at East Kent.

Mr Kershaw said: "I am extremely pleased to have been appointed as the new Chief Executive at the Trust and look forward to working with all of the staff and our partners, as we take the organisation to its next stage of development. Salisbury has a very good reputation for the delivery of safe, high quality and efficient care. I  will be focussing on leading the Trust as it continues with this, as well as addressing the challenges that exist and further developing services for all our patients."

Luke March, Chairman of  Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust said: "Matthew was an outstanding candidate for the post and I am delighted that we have secured his services. The NHS is moving forward at a real pace,  both locally and nationally with real improvement in services and facilities for patients.  There are a number of  challenges for us all and I believe that we will continue to move forward, with our patients  benefiting from an exciting and progressive health service, which will continue to flourish and develop under Matthew's leadership."
