Request Summary: HSJ Inquiry - Elective care tracker

Request Category: Media

Question Number 1:
NHS trusts elective care tracker systems record instances when a patient is removed from a waiting list (eg elective admission list or appointment waiting list), and the reason for this removal (see for example https://datadictionary.nhs.uk/attributes/elective_admission_list_removal_reason.html).

For each of the separate periods (1) 2017-18, (2) 2018-19, (3) 2019-20, (4) 2020-21, and (5) April-August 2021, please provide information in table attached

Answer To Question 1:
Please find the answers in the attached spreadsheet. Please note the following point about this data:

The Trust Incomplete Waiting List (PTL) figures in question 1 are the reported PTL size at the end of Month 1 for each financial year. As the PTL is a snapshot at the end of each month, we aren’t able to provide an aggregate or average figure for this question. The PTL is a count of all active RTT Periods on both Admitted and Non-Admitted pathways.

The figures for question 2 are the reported total number of stopped RTT periods throughout the year for each financial year, for both Admitted and Non-Admitted pathways.

For both questions 1 and 2, this data is available on the NHS website for published RTT data, therefore requestors are able to obtain this information themselves directly from the site, rather than requesting via the Trust.

The figures in question 3 are not directly related to questions 1 and 2 as the Reason for Removal is recorded against an Access Plan (Waiting List) Entry, rather than an RTT period. A patient may have more than one APE per RTT period.
These figures cover both Inpatient and Outpatient Access Plan Entry removals.

The NHS Data Dictionary definition of Elective Admission List Removal Reason outlines 4 national codes and reasons, but there are a lot of local variations of the reasons in our EPR, as per the table below.
https://datadictionary.nhs.uk/attributes/elective_admission_list_removal_reason.html

Many values in question 3 are <=5 therefore they have been removed in line with Information Governance guidelines.
