Positive Image, Motivation and Support

The Positive Image, Motivation and Support (PIMS) service provides additional support to women living in Wiltshire to help them have the healthiest possible pregnancy. The PIMS service supports women who have a raised BMI (body mass index) or who smoke, to help reduce complications during pregnancy and labour assisting in improving the long term future health of both mum and baby.

If you have a raised BMI, you have a greater risk of developing gestational diabetes, raised blood pressure and other complications during pregnancy and labour. By providing nutritional information, exploring thoughts and behaviours around food, the PIMS Team will work with you to manage your weight gain in pregnancy. Dieting and losing weight during pregnancy is not recommended unless under the care of a doctor or a specialist service.

If your BMI is 30 or above, a member of the Team will contact you and arrange an appointment which will either take place on a one-to-one basis or a virtual appointment using the Attend Anywhere platform.

Smoking in Pregnancy is harmful to both mothers and their unborn babies. Smoking will deprive your unborn baby of oxygen, leading to complications in your baby's growth and development. Women who smoke need extra scans during pregnancy and may you need extra monitoring during labour to ensure your baby's well-being. Smoking during pregnancy impacts a child's long term health, increasing the risk of developing respiratory, ear nose and throat conditions and learning difficulties. Follow the link below to learn more about smoking in pregnancy:

One of the team will contact you to arrange an appointment to discuss ways of supporting you to stop smoking in pregnancy. Every member of the Team is a trained Support to Stop Smoking Advisor. Having support from an advisor in addition to Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) really does give you the best chance of quitting smoking.

If you would like more information about the PIMS service, please talk to your midwife or contact the Team via the Antenatal Clinic. We aim to be in touch shortly after your booking appointment with your Midwife. Alternatively you can contact us before by email on:
