Meet the Team and Contact the Breast Unit

Our team at Salisbury Hospital is made up of three Breast Surgeons:

Miss Vicky Brown

Miss Anna Aertssen

Miss Roanne Fiddes

The Surgeons are responsible for co-ordinating the symptomatic one-stop breast clinics. The surgeons perform or closely supervise all of the operations performed by the team. They are ultimately responsible for the success of your pre and post operative care.

After your operation, the results are discussed with the whole team at MDT and one of the surgeons will discuss these results with you in clinic, two to three weeks after your surgery.

The Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) is a weekly meeting with a range of group of health and social care professionals who work together to manage your treatment and care. The meeting helps to plan further treatment of those patients with confirmed or possible serious breast conditions.

The below information is designed to introduce you to some of the members of our team and help you understand their roles within the MDT and in your journey following on from your initial clinic appointment.

Radiologists

Our team at Salisbury Hospital is made up of four Radiologists and a team of Radiographers:

Our Breast Service could not run without the enthusiastic efforts of our Radiologists and team of Radiographers. They perform and report a range of tests which provide vital indications as to the final diagnosis of patients with breast symptoms (mammogram, ultrasound, radiology guided biopsies).

Histopathologist

Dr Matt Flynn

Our Histopathologist analyses samples of tissue set from clinic and theatre. They give us the most important single piece of information in the diagnosis of breast diseases. At the multidisciplinary meeting they help us to interpret the pathological report, so that between the team, an accurate plan for further treatment can be made.

Medical Oncologists

Our Medical Oncologists advise on and provide medical therapy for cancer. Their major role is with chemotherapy. At MDT, they will provide input on the advisability of chemotherapy for an individual patients and will then discuss the risks and benefits of this therapy with the patient. Chemotherapy is very effective in destroying cancer cells but can also damage normal body cells. The Oncologist must therefore skilfully balance doses of drugs and side effects to provide the best care.

Clinical Oncologists

Clinical Oncologists (Radiotherapy Doctors) advise on and give radiotherapy treatment. Radiotherapy treatment is important for early breast cancer and is also of value if the breast cancer returns - to relieve local symptoms. Depending on where patients live, we use 4 radiotherapy centres: Southampton, Poole, Basingstoke and Bath, as we do not have facilities to provide radiotherapy at Salisbury Hospital.

Plastic Surgeons

One of the main factors that distinguishes the service at Salisbury from any other hospitals is our close contact with a large group of highly experienced Plastic Surgeons. They can provide the best advice on breast reconstruction, working very closely with our Breast Reconstruction Nurses.

We work with all of the Surgeons in the department, each has a slightly different range of skills, so that we can access the right people to give you the optimal result.
