Symptoms and diagnosis

Most people do not have symptoms of cervical cancer in the early stages. You may have symptoms such as usual bleeding such as heavy periods or bleeding in between periods, bleeding from the vagina after sex and post menopause bleeding. Other symptoms may include vaginal discharge that is smelly, frequent urine infections and pain in the lower tummy or back. It is important to go to the GP if you have any of these symptoms and if you have concerns.

The Eve Appeal have produced this poster that shows the signs and symptoms to look out for.

If you have symptoms, you may have a cervical screening test, but this won’t reveal a diagnosis. If your GP suspects you may have cervical cancer, you may be referred to a specialist for further tests.

All women aged 25-64 will be invited for a cervical screening test (sometimes known as a smear test).  This is not a test for cancer but can detect abnormal cell growth.
