Your consultant may suggest Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The ICSI technique is usually recommended when the male partner has a very low sperm count, poor morphology or motility. This method is also used when the sperm has been retrieved surgically or previous IVF attempts suggest that ICSI should be used.
ICSI only differs from conventional IVF in the way sperm is treated in the laboratory. Rather than mixing the prepared sperm with the eggs, the embryologist selects a single sperm to inject directly into the egg. The rest of the treatment is the same as IVF.
If the cause of your infertility is a sperm problem then ICSI may be suitable for you. Our consultants will recommend ICSI to you if it is clinically indicated in your case and required to give you the best chance of treatment success.
