NHS 111 is your first stop for urgent but non-emergency health concerns. Whether it’s a physical or mental health problem and you’re unsure where to get help, NHS 111 can guide you to the right service - such as a GP, pharmacist, urgent treatment centre, or nurse. NHS 111 provides free, expert advice 24/7 - online or by phone.

For advice on physical or mental health issues

If it’s a life-threatening emergency, always call 999 immediately.

What happens when you contact NHS 111?

A trained advisor will ask you some simple questions about your symptoms. They’ll then recommend the best local NHS service for your needs - whether that’s speaking to a nurse, visiting an emergency dentist, consulting a pharmacist, or booking a GP appointment.

Pharmacy First - Start with someone qualified

Sore throat? Earache? Sinus Trouble? Your local pharmacist ccan offer expert advice and, where appropriate, treatment for certain common conditions without a GP appointment.

Many are open late and at weekends, and can now prescribe medication for certain conditions directly.

Use the NHS App to order repeat prescriptions, manage appointments and access NHS 111 online. Order your regular medicines in good time, especially around weekends and holidays.

Download the NHS App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

How to log in

To use the NHS App, set up an NHS login.
You can log in using:

Your NHS login email, password, and a security code sent to your phone
Or, if available, your device’s fingerprint or face recognition (biometrics)

You can also log in via the NHS website.

Self-care - Some things can be managed at home

Many minor illnesses and injuries can be managed safely at home. Things like cuts, grazes, sprains, coughs, and colds.

Keep some basic medicines and first aid items in your cupboard, such as:

Painkillers (like paracetamol or ibuprofen)
Cough and cold remedies
Decongestants
Indigestion tablets
Plasters and antiseptic

Your GP - For ongoing health needs

For ongoing or long-term health conditions, your GP remains your best point of contact.

They know your health history and can offer personalised support and treatment.

Walk-in Centre - Evening and weekend access

Our Walk-in Centre in Salisbury provides medical help for urgent problems that are not life-threatening.

It’s the right place for many common conditions that need prompt attention but not emergency care.

Location: Millstream House Avon Approach, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 3SL

Opening times: Weekdays 6:30pm-10pm, Weekends & Bank Holidays 8am-8pm.

Minor Injuries Units - Get the right help for minor injuries

There is a Minor Injuries Unit located in Andover, which is approximately 18 miles from Salisbury.

Treatments at this clinic include:

Treating minor head injuries
Facial and eye injuries
Foreign body removal
Fractures
Bites
Minor burns
Wound assessment and closure
An X-ray facility on site (if required) Monday to Friday from 9pm to 4:30pm, excluding bank holidays.

Appointments are encouraged through NHS111, however there is a walk-in service. Please see their website for full details.

Other local Minor Injury Units include:

Blandford MIU 9am-5pm, Mon & Weds only (closed on bank holidays)
Chippenham, Bristol & Trowbridge open 7 days a week (visit the website for specific opening times). Please note, the Minor Injuries Unit in Trowbridge has now moved. The new centre is located at Hammersmith Fields, opposite Trowbridge Community Hospital, close to Trowbridge Health Centre.

Emergency Care - When every second counts

If someone is seriously ill or injured, or their life may be at risk, call 999 or attend the Emergency Department (A&E) as appropriate.

At Salisbury District Hospital, the Emergency Department is located via Entrance A.

Follow the red signs for Accident and Emergency — the department is at the top of the ramp or via Level 3.
