Maternity Unit

Welcome to Salisbury District Hospital's Maternity Unit!

Whether you are expecting a baby or thinking of starting a family, we are delighted that you are considering us for your care. We are a small, professional, and friendly team supporting approximately 2,500 mothers per year.

Our aim is for you to have a safe and fully informed pregnancy and birth experience, resulting in a healthy mother and baby. We like to offer parents a choice of where they give birth, and our priority is to provide high quality care. This can be in the Maternity Unit, our new Birth Centre or at home.

We are a team that include caring midwives and experienced specialist doctors (obstetricians), led by Joanne Hayward, Head of Maternity & Neonatal Services. We are supported by our other healthcare professionals from the Neonatal Unit and across the hospital to provide you with the most comprehensive care. We always include the parents in any decisions made, keeping you fully informed and involved in your care and supporting you to make the right decisions for you and your baby. We also encourage you to tell us about your needs and expectations.

Our Unit includes:

As of Thursday 1st February 2024, women are able to receive their flu vaccination (at any stage of pregnancy until 31st March 2024) and their pertussis vaccines (after 16 weeks) Monday – Friday, 13:00 - 16:00 in the Antenatal Clinic at SFT's Maternity Unit. Women don’t need to make an appointment and can just drop in. All women that attend the Antenatal Clinic for scans and consultant reviews will continue to be offered their immunisations by the immunisation team. Please note we are currently not offering Covid-19 vaccinations, as we are now out of season for this vaccination.

Please note: Where the term ‘women’ is used on this page, this refers to all birthing people.

Our staff at Salisbury District Hospital have long been well regarded for the quality of care and treatment they provide for our patients and for their innovation, commitment and professionalism. This has been recognised in a wide range of achievements and it is reflected in our award of NHS Foundation Trust status. This is afforded to hospitals that provide the highest standards of care.
