Request Summary: Personal Assistant/paid carers
Request Category: Campaigning organisation
Question Number 1: Does your hospital trust allow patients to have their Personal Assistant/paid carers assist them in hospital settings?
Answer To Question 1: The Trust do allow personal assistants/paid carers to assist them, but this is managed at a local level as when a patient is in a bay other considerations have to be taken into account, so each instance is reviewed at an individual level. Where a personal assistant/ paid or unpaid is supporting an individual patient the clinicians remain in overall responsibility for the individuals treatment and there must be documentation of the care provided by the personal assistant/carer by the clinical team.
Question Number 2: Does your trust have a protocol or policy in place regarding Personal Assistants/paid carers assisting with complex care needs in hospital settings? What is it?
Answer To Question 2: The Trust do not have a specific protocol or policy but work on principle of reviewing on individual merits
Question Number 3: Does this policy apply both to admissions as well appointments and treatments as a day patient?
Answer To Question 3: Yes it would apply to both – outpatient setting is far easier to accommodate as the appointment is individual – with all other areas other factors have to be considered such as space, mixed sex accommodation etc
Question Number 4: How many times in the last 3 years has a patient had their care needs met by their usual PAs/paid carers whilst in hospital?
Answer To Question 4: The Trust do not hold this detail
