Question Number 2: Does the Trust have a policy on offering or recommending a colostomy to inpatients at the Spinal Unit? If so please provide a copy | |
Answer To Question 2: No there isn’t a policy. | |
Question Number 3: In the event offering or recommending a colostomy is not covered by a formal policy, what is the procedure in respect of a patient undergoing a colostomy following inpatient admission for rehabilitation for spinal cord injury? | |
Answer To Question 3: If a colostomy is clinically indicated or requested by the patient, the spinal medical team or the patient’s GP will make a referral to the colorectal consultants. They will then have an appointment with a stoma nurse to be given practical information and check understanding of the procedure, and then another appointment in the dedicated clinic where they are seen by the colorectal consultant and stoma nurse together. Risks v potential benefits are discussed. The opportunity to speak to a patient with SCI who has had a colostomy of the same gender, approximate age and injury level is offered. At this appointment the patient may decide against colostomy, decide in favour of it and be added to the waiting list, be given more time to decide what they want to do, or be referred to the High Risk Anaesthetic clinic if they wish to proceed but have significant co-morbidities. | |
