Request Summary: Nurse-Led Consent in Endoscopy Services

Question Number 1: I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 regarding nurse-led patient consent processes within endoscopy services at your Trust. Specifically, I would be grateful if you could provide the following information: Do nurses working in endoscopy obtain patient consent for procedures? If yes, please confirm whether this applies to all types of endoscopic procedures or only specific ones.

Answer To Question 1: Yes the nurses that are signed off as competent and have been fully assessed can consent for all diagnostic procedures so Gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy only.

Question Number 2: What Agenda for Change (AfC) band are the nurses who undertake consent discussions and obtain patient consent in endoscopy settings?

Answer To Question 2: Band 5 and above.

Question Number 3: Could you provide details of the competency framework, training requirements, or internal policies that support nurses in undertaking the consent process? If available, please supply any relevant competency documentation or a summary of the training and assessment process.

Answer To Question 3: The nurses after 6 months if fully signed off as the role of nurse 1 in all procedures can then progress to their consent training, the nurses need to undertake the Trust's online training on consent, spend time shadowing staff that have been signed off consent competent, all staff will have to have 5 observations prior to sign off. The observations should include a minimum of 1 Consultant (2 would be preferable) and the remaining can be Nursing colleagues who are competently consenting patients already for the particular procedure. Attached are the competency forms for each procedure.

Question Number 4: Could you provide a copy of the consent form used, or a redacted example/template, showing the sections completed by nursing staff when obtaining consent?

Answer To Question 4: Please find attached a PDF of the 4 x consents for Gastroscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy. Please note that these are currently under review.
